This is the author’s first collection of short stories. In the twelve stories, the reader will encounter, among others, an attorney who tries to recover a lost love in a dart game, a narrating Labrador Retriever, a felon turned evangelist, an attorney with alzheimers, and a widower who becomes a gourmet cook.
The cover story, Last Rites, is the tale of two friends who spend one week a year canoeing in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. Gus “Yeti” Blackford, a Vietnam vet, extracts a promise from his friend Eric that, after Gus’ death, Eric will sprinkle Gus’ ashes from the top of a dangerous railroad trestle onto a favorite fishing stream. When the ashes arrive, Eric sets out for northern Ontario to fulfill his promise. In the process, Eric has a premonition that Gus is not really dead, but for some reason, wants to the world to believe he is.
